Default More than one VST doesn't work?

I'm trying to use my Fantom G as a scratchpad sequencer to control virtual instruments on Pro Tools and have PT slaved to the Fantom. I'm having the problem that I can't seem to record/playback more than one instrument. Whatever instrument I have selected, all of the midi channels that I transmit (or try to transmit to different instruments) goes to that one selected instrument. I have the midi setup to only send/receive on the VST track to the midi channel I want to use but that seems to make no difference. I must have something set up wrong but I'm not sure what that is. Could someone explain how to control multiple instruments on PT (like a multi-channel midi instrument source)?

I can arm them and record. It's just routing all midi data previously recorded to that one armed track.

Stack sounds in the sense that I want to be able to treat PT as a slave device initially while I scratch out the main idea on my Fantom, using its sequencer to control multiple VI's on multiple midi channels.

Once I'm ready to edit, mix, record, then import the midi data into the correct channels/VI tracks and use PT as the master device controlling the Fantom. The latter part works just fine. Mainly I want to do this because the Fantom sequencer is a little easier/quicker to use for sketching the main idea.
