Default I wish AVID would just give up on HD Native and make this box --

There I said it --

Why not just evolve the OMNI to be the Apollo killer. Eight analog ins (only 2 preamps is fine) - 8 digital ins + 2 spdif , the monitor section, outputs the same and add the equivalent of 1/4 of an HDx card inside - TB and USB3 connectivity. Done - sell that for $3.5K with PTHD software and you would rule the market (can probably charge more if you have to ) . For more dsp, i/o or both - add cards. You can even make a dsp-less version for $2K and just call it native. Improve that ridiculous Core Audio driver and be done...

Everyones latency issue with HDN would be solved and you would have a much simpler easy to understand product line. i/o and dsp totally scaleable from 16 channels to the limit of HDx cards. Maybe even abandon the HD software and just sell pro tools with all features enabled - call it $1K and go on with life...

Sure market a scaled down version with mboxes if you wish...

I don't have latency issues with HDN, why so many people complain?

Too many tracks?

I'm with feliponk, having no latency issues

many sessions of 60-70 tracks, TONS of instances of Waves plugs

I'm loving it

Honestly, I'm very happy with what Avid did with Native

Never been cheaper to be on an HD format - and I don't need the DSP since my Mac Pro has enough balls to handle the sessions and the processing/plugs

I love it

(Though, I would never buy from major dealers, such as sweetwater, guitar center, etc..... prices are bloated... find yourself a small authorized dealer, and you'll get a screaming deal)

I don't have "trouble" with latency either - but you know I am sensitive here and there are times when more than 3ms is just not my preference ....

SO:

If we had just a little DSP power and could leave our sessions at 512 and then drop anything into record with a little compression, EQ, verb and delay - my world would be perfect (LOL). Then all us nit picky latency freaks would have just that little bit of super low latency foldback with effects at any time ...

Perhaps what you're thinking is a hybrid of HDX and HD Native. DSP only for low latency tracking, but nothing else. Although costwise, I don't know how much cheaper than HDX it could be.

Regarding the interfaces, I think they should do this:

Open up the other I/O on the Omni, to have it be more simultaneous I/O, and dump the HD IO 8x8 configuration. Opening the Omni's other I/O would make it too similar anyway. Then just have the 16x16 and the Omni. Lower the 16x16 price about $500, so there's not as big of a price gap between them. And still keep the HD IO Digital, and the MADI.

I think we'll see something like this coming down the road geared to the music producer market. It'll be a gen 6-7 mbox pro type thing.
For band tracking I see no problem with the current HDX system, other than lack of DSP plugs.

If a few more 3rd party developers sign on with AAX DSP we'll get this product. At a good price point avid could sell a ton of these.

If HDN is paired with a current CPU there shouldn't be latency issues, especially with the dual buffer in PT11, but if latency is a problem spilt the signal with a line box.

So - I love my HDN system - I make it work great - but imagine ....

You got your session rocking - for whatever reason you didn't print the 10 VI's you have going - its all great but buffer is at 512 cause your mac mini works better there. Now you want the one critical vocal. You don't want to use an external foldback cause there is this cool delay and verb and eq that is perfect - you just want to drop into record and done. If there was a tiny amount of DSP in the interface - and maybe it only engages on record armed tracks - you are in and out - a baby HDx workflow ...

Don't need a full HDx workflow - just the low latency with plug ins on record armed tracks regardless of buffer setting.

(yes -nts7 - I like it )

i'm happy with what im getting out of my HDN system but i rely on my custom PC to handle processing

i have to admit some dsp processing would be desired when it comes to tracking... some effects we just cant track with as it gets in the way of trying to capture that 'moment'.

pres are okay honestly i dont use my OMNI pres, i run through Tube Uad w/ 1176 style compression..
