Default Is there such a thing?

I have an 002r on a desktop system. I use an ext. FW drive for the audio. PT won't run unless it sees the hardware connected to the computer. Is there a way to take that content drive to another system with PT loaded, without having to have the 002r. In other words. What if I already have everything tracked. All I want to do is edit and mix on a laptop somewhere without the 002r. I realize that the 002r is the I/O, but would there be a way to just use the sound card on the laptop to listen? Is this possible?

Nope can't do it. Digi built it that way so that there was no chance you didn't buy their hardware.

I guess getting an M Box would be the closest thing? Can I just plug it in and mix stuff that was tracked with the 002r? (as long as I'm only tracking @ 48K)

I find it is annoying to need even the MBox...
Couldn't DIGI provide a kind of USB-key along with each hardware they sell, which would just allow to use PT to mix (very useful when having a laptop...)? That way DIGI would sell as much hardware but the user would be happier

As a programmer I must say that introducing something like a USB dongle would end up leading someone to crack the software. Then the next thing you know everyone on the internet is running pro tools for free. I think as handy as it would be, it would end up harming things as well.

The only option I can think of, would be to try and edit in PT Free. When your done, all you need is the session icon copyed back to your 002 computer (you already have the audio files, unless you've done some audiosuiting).

No offence Berm, but there was a 32 trk PT LE floatin' around for at least a yr while we legit guys were suffing with only 24 trks (don't we all miss our 4 trk days of submixing? haha). So I don't see how a dongle would stop anything? More money on R&D on ways to stop piracy seems the only answer. Just my HO.

I didn't say the dongle would help piracy, I said it would aid piracy. The same thing has happened with a lot of the Avid stuff.
