Default Hitting save during playback locks up ProTools

I just upgraded to 11.2.1 the day it became available. Since then, whenever I command-S during playback, I get the spinning beach ball and my CPU meter spikes and locks at 64%. I have to force quit Pro Tools and open it back up to get running again. Any ideas?

ProTools 11.2.1, OSX 10.9.4, Mac Mini 2.6Ghz i7 w/ 8GB RAM, Focusrite 18i20

So now I have gone back to 11.1.2 and it is still doing it. Not every time, but still a big bother. A plugin maybe?

I am using an older computer with pt 11.1.2 but I usually make sure to hit save when nothing is going on in fear of a freeze and crash.

Cause - Air Instruments... Fairly certain...

Are you using Velvet, Transfuzer, Hybrid... Loom even?

I can do ok with Structure but those 4 are REMOVED... unless I need it which happens with Velvet from time to time and I ALWAYs forget at some point then just have to print that track and get back to work.

I have not upgraded to the Newest Air Instruments... did you? If this is still happening that sucks.

What machine is this on. I was on a 2010 12 core mac pro 12 g ram... specs below.

OS 10.9 and various 10.8 also crashed/ locked up Velvet again did on me with my most recent specs below.

Airport OFF helped me. at least it raised the threshold I would seethe freeze.

Also using the PT aggregate audio driver helped me also not eliminated the issue but raised the threshold it occurred.

I tried everything, new drives, OS, fresh installs multiple times, nothing but stock and Air VI's

There seems to be a few folks who DO NOT have these problems and so there MUST be a link between my machine, yours and those who DON"T have this problem... something we are all missing when posting specs...

Its crazy. and hard to get real info out of those who DON'T experience the issue to try and narrow down causes.

Last I left it with Avid was 3 months ago at least and they supposedly re created it and had it logged, so is it Avid. or Air fault... who knows.. but hopefully whatever the cause it can be Fixed.

In my case anyway...

an if your not using those then sorry no help..

and my obvious frustration has me taking over this thread and for that I'm also sorry..

but if you do have these particular vi's in use then lets try and work together to track it down further..

Your machine is very different from mine so thats weird. and Ive had it on Multiple OS's so its not just 10.9.4. and in multiple version of PT from 10.8 to 11.2.1

sucks.

Thanks Shifted Music, I'll try your suggestions and see if I gain any ground. I've not had any problems like this until the past few days. It generally runs like a top. Computers - making our lives easier.

I concur it used to happen to me as well. If I am using Air Music VI's I HAVE TO STOP PLAYBACK AND THEN SAVE.

I've written about this before...so let's walk through this...

When you are playing back, your DAWs hard drive is doing the second most demanding task you can ask it to do (first is recording).

You are trying to play back or record a continuous stream of data, which a hard drive such as those used in DAWs simply cannot do.

Unlike with a phonograph, which uses a spiral groove (you can put the needle at the beginning and the record will play without interruption until the end), a hard drive plays back/records a concentric circular track, then "jumps" to another concentric circular track and continues playing back/recording. Even if we only had to deal with head movement you can see how playing back/recording cannot be done without interruption. Keep in mind this is an extremely simplified explanation...there is a lot more going on other than just head movement.

So, you've got your hard drive running to the max and then you say, "Wait, stop, I want to save something!"

You can see how that might run your computer's "pucker factor" way up really fast.

Get in the habit of doing a "save" when you stop the transport after a recording pass...that's all you need.

But doing a "save" with the transport running...that's a total "no-no"...

I do not work for Avid (their loss)...my only relationship with Avid is that of a customer (when I'm not too poor to buy stuff, like now)...and that hot administrative assistant...that's more of a "thing" than a "relationship" (that should keep them guessing for a while...)

Just rockin'...what more is there?
