In MIDI Preferences, what do you have selected for the Default Thru Instrument?

Hi Chucks, I've just checked midi preferences and the default thru instrument is expand2 1-1.

Should I change this ?

Yes, change it to first selected MIDI track.

It works as expected here, for each 4 midi tracks I have my keyboards as 'all channels' in input of the midi tracks is it the case for you ? because I have tried with midi 1 for track 1 , midi 2 in input for track 2 etc ... and it didn't work.

When you assign the MIDI input like this you have to physically change the MIDI channel on the controller for this to work. Much easier to select 'All' or if you need/want to pick a specific device listed in predefined, easier to select 'All Channels'.

Thanks for the screen recording.

Real-time MIDI will be affected by the Default Thru Instrument pref, so having this set to "Xpand2 1-1" means that a keyboard (in the MIDI editor or an external controller) will pass notes through to MIDI ch1 of the first instance of Xpand2. Best to set this to "None" so that Rec enabling a track controls this, or "Follows First Selected MIDI Track" then select (highlight) the track (name) you are working on.

Can you confirm that you played the session I provided (not just clicked on the MIDI Editor's Keyboard) and that it didn't trigger all 4 parts?

ok I've just finished thrashing pro tools and restarted it....but the problem persists. I think I might try downloading pro tools 2018.7 and see how I get on with that

2018.7 shouldn't behave any differently so I wouldn't recommend that.

Did my session play correctly? (Actually playing the session, not just clicking on the keyboard.)

Your video shows you have the "Inst 1" track selected in the MIDI Editor (black dot to the left of it in the upper left under Tracks), and it's likely set to ch1. Try changing that to the MIDI track you want the Editor's keyboard to control.
