Default Can Pro Tools software work with any non-digidesign hardware

Can you only use the MBox2, Digi 003, etc, or are other company's hardware compatible? If so, what are the compatible DAWs?

I use logic a lot with all of the mboxes and 002 and 003. If fact Logic loves digi hardware. (the only digi hardware that seems to be not as compatible are the HUI's (Control 24, etc....)). Also Ableton, Reason in fact allmost all audio programs will recognise digi hardware, the other way round however...........

Pro Tools software will not function without Digidesign hardware. The program won't open.

Just realised I read his post inside out, upside down, back to front, or inverted the polarity of his meaning (you get the idea!!!)... Doh!

albee is of course correct. No digi hardware = no protools

There is the Digidesign M-Powered version of ProTools:

M-Powered is a fully LE/HD compatible version that is also compatible with any M-Audio interface. M-Audio has a variety of choices for many different purposes.

Also Mackie Onyx recording consoles, with Firewire connectivity are now compatible with the M-Powered version of Pro Tools.
