Default Mp3 Option...

Is the PT MP3 option worth it? How different is it from taking a song into Itunes and changing it to an MP3?

Well worth it IMO. Just for the convenience alone. Sound-wise I'm not sure. I never give out MP3's anyway.

It saves a couple of minutes, per song.
100 songs per year= about 3 1/2 hours.. divided by 20.00.. about 6 dollars an hour. If your time is worth more than 6 bucks an hour then it is a no brainer. That is for you to decide. ff

True, but are you basically bouncing it in real time to an Mp3?
If so then a typical 3 min song has to be bounced twice when a client wants an mp3 also...
I try VERY hard not to give out MP3s but when people ask for it I'll do it.
Thanks guys.

Now I am thinking about all the menial things and how much time they take up... Like, for example, backing up data, waiting for computer to start up and load... etc. (deleting prefs and restoring them...)

No way.. After a mix/ruff is done.. Recording to Track of course.. then just cmmd-shft-K and export as MP3... instantaneous. Yet another plus for RTT... BTD is "old school".

Wait till you need that data, and it won't feel so menial, but I know what you mean...

usually when exporting mp3's i need to title it, etc.... so the client makes no mistake in listening to Older versions. Batch would not work for that I believe. ff

I use a script - Doug's Free Apple Scripts - 'Drop a Few My Way' - icon is put on Finder window and I just drag my bounces/exports to it, iTunes launches, pop-up for WAV/MP3, whatever, click 'go', pick destination, and a few seconds later, I have Mp3's at itunes' current import settings - best part? iTunes doesn't save the file, requiring deleting or 'Unkown Artist - Unknown Album' filling up. Free, fast, and it rocks.

There is a sonic difference between the ProTools encoder and most other mp3 encoders. Avid uses the Fraunhofer codec. I have done a lot encoding tests and the ProTools encoding introduces far less artifacts than iTunes or other common encoders.

iTunes uses the Fraunhofer codec as well. And it's not the best.

LAME encoder produces better results.
