Default It this right for me??

I'm thinking of picking this up, for Win or Mac, not sure yet(anyone know if this will work on Win2000??). But I was wondering if this was right for me. I'm looking for a home studio app that I could use to record drum track from a machine, guitar and bass lines, and vocal. I'd be doing these all alone, but once the band and reh space are formed, I'd like to use it for regular recording as well. I need a unit that can go from basic recording, to hardcore. I'd like to then burn the tracks to a cd.

I've read a lot about this unit, everything I could find, but I've never really read any "nuts and bolts" about it. Everything seems to be a "press release" of some kind. So, can someone give me the low down on this "home recording" unit? I've never stepped into a recording scene before, so please help me out with the wording.

Thanks
Heath

Ultimately, the best way to determine if the Digi001 is right for you is to check one out in person at your local authorized Digidesign dealer. Our Digi001 web site now features a dealer locater at http://www.digi001.com/dealerlocater.html

Digi001 is currently available for the Mac. The Windows 98 version should hit the stores in mid to late March.

Go for it. It's a great tool (001) for recording your drum machine, guitar, bass, vocals, etc.

When you get to the point where you're recording a band, you'll need more mic preamps. Right now, you can record only two microphones directly into it without any "extras".

One other thing: when it comes out for the PC in March or so, you'll have to go through the pains that the Mac users have done to get it stable. You may want to get a Mac to avoid that.

Your computer, 001interface, and ProTools software would give you a multitrack recorder, a powerful editer, and the ability to mix down 24 tracks, with effects built-in(plug-ins.
It's up to you to decide whether the sound sources going into the 001 box are going to be mics, keyboards, guitar amps, mixing board, etc.
The output from a mic isn't "hot enough", and needs a preamp to boost the signal to "line level". The other six inputs on the 001 are line level.
The 2 mic pres on the 001 are like a bonus. It gives you the option to record up to two mics simultaneously. If you need to record a take with more than two microphones involved, you'll need more pres.
You can buy a mic pre for about $100 (or way more); insert it between your mic and the 001. Or you can buy a mixing board with pre's. If you buy a board, be aware of how many outputs it has.

heath, another option for you might be to consider a session8 w/a 486 running w/3.1.
this is a good basic inexpensive option that works well. problems do exist with w/95 os, and w/98 is said to be almost impossible to make work. you should be able to get the computer cheap, 200 bucks tops, and the ses8 seems to go anywhere from $500-$1000 depending on the extras. if you can get the r1 controller, great, as this puts all the level controls along with the transport controls into a more familar format. it is basicly a mixing control board that frees up your hands from the mouse and keyboard to do more creative things like make music.
peace, rob

Heath, i'd pretty much lose the session 3
idea and a 486, my god lets jump back a
few years in technology.

With the 001, you get 24 tracks of 24-bit
0r 16-bit sound, automation and plug-ins.

Yes, you'll need a computer. But, as the
newer models come out, the older ones go
down in price. Also, older macs can be
upgraded with 3rd party cards. Jump in!

There a many of us in the same boat, but,
with software from the guys who started
the digital audio revolution and the help
from user's on this site, you can't go
wrong.

Why do the dealers only have demo versions that have expired?

Save time, patience, and money and go with something besides the 001. I have been dealing with it for about a month and a half and finally came to hate it. But hey, if you have about $4000 to spend on it and a new G4, go for it. I would suggest going with a PC and Vegas Pro and the Sonic Foundary line-up. Maybe not as neat looking as the PT layout, but will work right with, yes, a plentiful of different types of PC's. Just need something of 200MHz or faster.

001 is **** !
