Default New computer, Old performance 001

hi all I just bought a new computer (p4 1.7ghz winME) I have nothing on it except Pro Tools, I get an error message (running out of CPU power, take out some plug ins (or something like that)),
when I check my system resourses at idle it's at 90% when I open Pro Tools it drops to 63% even without a session open. I have read and tried all the posts regarding setting up windows, dma, bios etc, but it hasent gotten any better. I saw a post where another gentleman was having the same problems and everyone said it was his IRQ settings, this is where I'm lost. I was hoping someone could take a look and offer any suggestions
Thanks 18Duffs

IRQ 5 has usually proven to be a less than optimum IRQ for the Digi 001. I would suggest you disable one or both of your COM ports in BIOS. That would free up IRQ 3 & 4 for other devices. IRQs 3 & 4 are also generally not good for the Digi, but freeing them might allow other devices to use them, freeing other high priority IRQs for the Digi.

My experience has shown that on Intel systems IRQ 10 is usually the best for the Digi 001. Try to get the Digi on IRQ 10. You'll probably have to hard assign the slot that the Digi is in to IRQ 10 in BIOS. Typically the best PCI slots on my Intel systems for the Digi card are either slot 4 or slot 5.

IRQs 10 & 9 are about the only ones worth a damn for the Digi 001. If you can get it on either one of those, preferably 10, you should be okay. Sharing the IRQ with USB ports could also prove to be a problem, but let's just try to get the Digi on 10 or 9 for now and then we'll go from there

That's the best I can offer right now.

What motherboard are you running? What chipset does it use?

Mike

run msconfig and check any software running in the background.
afterward disable anything no crucial to PT.
such as:
USB, CDRW, SCSI Adapters etc.. until you see improvment.
(afterward enable them one by one to find the one causing problems).

if u use VIA chipset you should download the updated drivers I've seen major performance boost using those.
