Default Drive Solutions for G5

Hi,

I'm currently upgrading to an HD3 system and putting it in a dual core 2.3 G5. Seeing as though I'm using my pcie slots, what are people doing for drives?

I have the one sata drive that is the system drive and will add a second internal sata drive for audio, but what about high track count sessions that need to span two drives? Is sata fast enough that you don't need to span the audio or?

Can you span audio off an internal sata drive as well as a firewire drive?

Looking for a little insight as to what others are doing.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi,

It does depend on what frequency and bit rate you work at etc, but i use my second SATA hard drive just for audio and at 48k 24 bit i can quite easily run 80+ tracks? now this is not Digi's recommendation!! officially they recommend about 32 per drive i think!

You can use external firewire 800 (and probably 400)as well, but i haven't been able to get the same track count as internal SATA. there are probably users on here who run sessions of up to 150 or above and can advise better if you're running sessions of that size!!

Thanks for the info, that's the sort of real world info I was looking for.

I'm usually only at 44.1 or 48...around 80 tracks max as well.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi
I'm using my stock 250gig SATA for system stuff, a second 320gig SATA for audio recording, I've also added a G5 Jive rack system and a SATA Controller by Sonnet which allows me to add 3 additional SATA drives. Everything works fine!! The only issue is that you can't boot from any system drives that are mounted in the G5 Jive.

Also, here's the link to check it out!

I saw those, they look pretty cool. Unfortunately I don't have a free pci slot open for a controller card.

Thanks for the info though.
