Default Routing soundcard output through digi002 rack

Is there any possible way to use my digi002 rack, which is connected to my studio monitors and headphones, to hear the output of my soundcard? The reason for wanting to do this is because i use a couple of standalone softwares (ie:band in a box)which do not support RTAS. I want to hear them through my speakers and headphones without having to keep on changing my 1/4" cables back and forth between my soundcard output and my digi002 rack outputs 1 & 2 everytime i use my standalone software versus using pro tools.

Run a cable from the soundcard output to the Alt Source inputs. Press the Alt Src to Mon button when you want to hear it.

dude, if this works, you're the "DIGI-MAN!" I've been asking people how to do this for ages now and nobody else seems to know. obviously, i won't have to have protools open to do this i'm assuming. also, is there anywhere on the digidesign site that explains doing this in detail? Thanks!

Ummm...no...

You run it into the alt-src , then push the ALT-SCR to mon, and then the hardware works and your sounds playboack through the device like magic. You must be using the monitor outs/out 1/2 on the digi for it to work.

This has been my wavedriver workaround as well.

Works like a charm!

And... its pretty normal stuff for an audio engineer. Signal routing... that stuff.

Cheers!

*MAGIC!* (good one, J)

There's this neat little document that comes with the 002R called "Getting Started: Digi 002 & Digi 002 Rack".

This procedure is covered in there, specifically page 51:
Quote:
Alt Source Inputs

These are unbalanced, two-conductor RCA-connectors
for connecting alternate audio sources
such as CD players or tape decks. The signal
from these inputs can be routed directly to the
Monitor Outputs (for monitoring) or to Inputs
7–8 (for direct input into Pro Tools) from the
top panel of Digi 002 (or the front panel of
Digi 002 Rack). Operating levels for these inputs
are fixed at –10 dBV.
and Page 62-63:
Quote:
Monitoring and Recording
from Alternate Sources

Digi 002 and Digi 002 Rack provide a pair of additional
inputs for monitoring and recording
from an external sound source such as a CD
player or tape deck. This alternate input is
equipped with standard RCA connectors and is
designed for input signals with a nominal operating
level of –10 dBV.

To monitor an alternate sound source through the

Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack Monitor Outputs:
1
Connect the outputs of the external device to
the left and right Alternate Source Inputs on the
back panel of Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack.
2 Press the “Alt Src to Mon” switch (located on
the top panel of Digi 002, and on the front
panel of Digi 002 Rack) to route the signal to the
Monitor Output.
3 Adjust Monitor Output or Headphone Output
levels to audition the input.

To record an alternate sound source directly into
Pro Tools:

1 Connect the outputs of the external device to
the left and right Alternate Source Inputs on the
back panel of Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack.
2 Press the “Alt Src to 7–8” switch (located on
the top panel of Digi 002, and on the front
panel of Digi 002 Rack) to route the signal directly
to Inputs 7–8 in Pro Tools.
When the “Alt Src to 7–8” switch is engaged, Inputs
7 and 8 on the back panel are inactive. Also,
because the signal can be monitored from
Pro Tools, it no longer passes directly to the
Monitor Outputs.

The document should have come with your system. If not it can be found from the Tech Doc section of the 002R support page or directly here.
