Default XP files on audio drive-safe to remove? &how to stop them from showing up.

I've upgraded to XP, now everytime I make changes while trying to streamline windows during reboot this comes up:

<windowsroot>\system32\hal.dll

I called microsoft and they showed me how to repair this file, but it puts me right back to where I was before... I haven't installed ANY other software, just XP. Any ideas? This is my 5th time installing....

Thanks,

Mat

Is this a clean install or upgrade from another OS?

Did you re-format the drive on each install? What hardware do you have?

I've done both an upgrade, then a clean install. I'm running a A7V266-E with an AMD 1600XP 512 megs of ram. I am almost finished with my 6th install... Is it possible the CD is corrupt? I find it strange that the same file keeps coming up missing. The changes I made to the OS were from the XP optimization thread...

Thanks,

Mat

OK, I've managed to get everything up and running. What a headache!!! Anyhow, one more question before I make an image of my hard drive. There are files on my audio drive that weren't there before... (looks like temp files, or back up files)How do I stop XP from placing these files on my audio drive, and is it safe for me to remove them?

Thanks,
Mat
