Default 2018.x on a Mid 2010 Mac Pro?

hi, can someone point me in the direction or do they know if I can run 2018.x on a Mid 2010 5,1 Mac Pro 8 core 2.4? I have searched for a while and I can't see where this is recommended or ill advised. I am running 2018 on other computers but I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing with my favorite computer, the Mac Pro. Thank you in advance.

Works fine on a 12 core 5,1 here!

Most later PT releases have behaved okay with the machine mentioned, but not 2018.4.

Just don’t expect to be able to use too many or too advanced plug-ins per channel or your 2.4GHz cores will choke. (Single core performance is somewhat limited with this machine.)

2018.4 Ultimate is working well for me other than the occasional AVE error (which has been happening to me on and off since HD12.0).

I run sessions with multiple videos, up to 256 tracks and up to about 350 plugins (not VI's).

I use pro tools every day (weekends generally included), for at least 6-7 hours and often longer.

I think 2018.4 Ultimate is generally very stable with my configuration.

My mac is a 2009 4.1 machine, so I suspect your system would run better.

Amazing! Not my story at all.
What's your secret? I might have to hire you or your IT technician to put your hands my my system for a couple of hours. :)

Works just fine on the half-dozen dual hex core 5,1s I've used it on (including my own) - aside from the slight hit from hex core to quad I don't imagine there's any issues.

Hello ae777

May I ask you what software version you use with intensity pro?

Here runs all great except the video and workspace.
But this has it been since PT12 (I jumped from 10)

Hi Alex,

I'm using 10.9.7
I was using 10.4.3, like you, for a long time but, on the recommendation of some here on the DUC, I installed Desktop Video 10.9.7 when I did a clean installation to High Sierra.
It seems just as good as 10.4.3 for sync on my system.
To be honest, I have pretty much stopped using the workspace and now use Basehead Ultra for managing my sound library.
I have found that the best video codec for me is Pro Res 422(LT) so I convert any video I receive to this before importing to pro tools.

I know, it is weird how some systems have no problems and some have heaps of problems. My machine is old and not even supported!

My system was originally set up with Yosemite and Pro tools HD12.0 by a very knowledgeable and meticulous friend who has since passed on (he was Buccanears here on the DUC).

I've tried to be fairly careful with how I manage it now but I'm not nearly as meticulous as my friend was so I figure part of my stability is just dumb luck!

One thing I do which might help others;

I always have the pro tools System Usage window open so that when I launch pro tools it comes up before I open a session.

If the CPU usage shows 0% then I just open a session and start working.

From time to time the CPU usage will go to 100% when I launch pro tools and then I know that if I continue, and open a session, I will get errors (usually AVE errors).

So I just quit pro tools and launch again until the CPU usage shows 0%.
Then I can open a session and everything will be stable.

I suspect I have a problematic plug in but I haven't been able to find it and the workaround I refer to above works fine for me.
