PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
While the ability to read SD2 files (again) in the new release of PT2020.9 is welcome, there still is no way to convert or import older PT5 sessions. I still have PT 9 on an old MBP but those who don't have a computer with an old PT install are still up the creak if they are trying to open old session files. This will be an increasing problem now that many albums recorded on older rigs and are up for re-release / remixing for 20/25th Anniversaries (which I'm doing quite a lot of these days)
Avid need to release a small program to convert older session files to PT 9 or above. Just my two cents…

Re: PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
Well, I've just tested a couple of older Pro Tools projects with PT 2020.9. While I don't remember off the top of my head which icons were for Pro Tools 5.1 vs., say, 5.0, when I do command I to get info on the project file, it does indicate if one's a PT 5.1 session vs. 5.0. In any case, while PT 2020.9 was unable to open the 5.0 sessions (in which the icon looks like a circular brown reel to reel tape), it did open and convert the SDII files on what seemed to be the 5.1 sessions (in which the icon has the name Pro Tools in it with blue on blue stripes on the top and a green background on the bottom of the icon). I couldn't open, though, the 5.1 sessions by double clicking the icon; I had to use the open session dialogue and navigate to the 5.1 session and select it to open it. I currently have my Macbook Pro partitioned with an earlier operating system on the smaller partition with PT 10 in that partition--I'll still have to keep that in place to convert the PT 5 sessions that I still haven't converted yet; but it does look like I can use PT 2020.9 to convert the 5.1 sessions.

Re: PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
The files with the tape reel icons are PT5 / 5.1 sessions. The others are PT6. I'm not able to open 5/5.1 files in PT 2020 either by click on the file itself, in the open session dialog, or through session import dialog.

Re: PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
My bad. The green icons are PT5.1 - reel icons are PT5.
You can open 5.1 in PT 2020.9. Thanks for pointing that out

As far as I can remember, you need PT10 to open PT6 or earlier sessions

That was previously the case, but as I tested just now, PT 2020.9 will open earlier files--but not 5.0.

Re: PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
That may be because PT5 files are OS9

Re: PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
I don't think this relates to OS9. My Macbook Pro is partitioned, with the smaller partition booting up as OS 10.8.5, and I have Pro Tools 10 installed on that smaller partition. Using Pro Tools 10, I can open both PT 5 and PT 5.1 projects on that OS 10 partition.

Re: PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
Good then. Sometimes people move files via CDROM or FAT filesystems which drops the resource fork. If you have had it on HFS all the time should not be a problem

Re: PT 2020.9 - Still can't open old PT5.1 Session files
I've been able to get 2020.9 to open old sessions by changing the file extension to .pts, but because the original files were SDII it doesn't include that audio in the session timeline and the filenames in the bin are greyed-out. Yes, it asks me to relink them, but should that cumbersome step be necessary with this new SDII functionality?
