Quick Reply, havent read all info:

Assuming you have a firewire interface: Did you do an "idiot" check (sometimes very helpfull
Check the Firewire chain:
Is your FW controller listed as working properly in Device Manager/ properly installed?
Did you check the FW cable, use another one if available (no damaged cable, not inserted??
Did you led the current bleed out of the PT - interface, Power cable out and turn on your PT interface...
Corrupt FW drivers?
Your PT interface card is damaged or your FW controller?

Check PT with interface on another PC if available to separate Hardware from Software issues

i can answer your question
because it happend to me i removed the driver first and thats what the problem is
let the install detect your current driver then it will uninstall it then reboot
then resume installl and you should be fine
