royalty split...
May be off topic a little but...
I get a vocal file and create music from scratch as a remix. My music business knowledge is 10 years out of date, it's pop dance remix for a known artist a a few years ago and the record label likes it. I am in the UK and it will be governed by the laws of England. What royalty offer should I expect? is it a set rate in the industry? |

Re: royalty split...
Don't know much about the differences in English entertainment law or even what's customary as compared to the US. All of my dealings have been in the US. I don't have enough information on your situation to be much help anyway as there are so many variables. I will give you the same advice I would give myself in your shoes...
Get a good entertainment lawyer to help you.

Re: royalty split...
@ Tony - there's a great article about the remix business in this and last months SoundonSound mag. I can't link you to the site because you need to subscribe to access recent issues. Bottom line was there are no set rates but fees charged range from £250 to £10,000 depending on who you're remixing.

Re: royalty split...
Yep, all very good responses!
Thers a lot in the terminology I think, composition & arrangement if writing credits are assigned Vs remix, which can amount to the same thing as I understand it but without renumeration. There is talk of a 20% of dealer price split for myself (including exec producer on my team who asked for 5% for his fledgling company.) He is my link into label and wants to bring in other remix work on this basis... Talk is cheap but, It's a speculative hobby at this time so I'll go with it for now. They seem to like my stuff at this moment, and that will be good for my profile at some point. I'll keep you posted as I'm sure others will be seeking this path from time to time. |

Re: royalty split...
Update:
20% on dealer price, not including promotional deals offer to me and exec producer, I re-wrote contract stipulating: I let the in perpertuity stand. 4% him and 16% me. Remixers to be credited on release. Agreement does not constitute partnership. Lets see what they say... |

Re: royalty split...
Update: as this is a learnin curve I thought I would update for others who find themselves in similar situation, so as I make mistakes others may learn from.
1. All seemed to be accepted as stated previousely 2. Mix was sent lacking a little compression as I assumed they would finalize tracks together to make them all sound sonically similar... Doh! lesson learned: NEVER ASSUME! only my self to blame... 3. Forgot about remix until one day facebook kept giving me the Oops messege all day, (hmmmmm, why so busy?) then this happened... Amazon sites: http://www.amazon.com/Tony-D-Candy-M...4129103&sr=1-3 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tony-D-Candy...4129325&sr=8-1 ------------- iTubes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/im-...re/id343672404 ------------- Also on Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/track/6niRWfG8O1lNtwLccKHtxh Well I didn't see that one comming. |
