Default PT 2020 CPU usage

Although I really liked PT 2020.11 I had to roll back to 2019.10 due to much higher CPU usage in bigger Sessions. Scrolling through video is also not as smooth as it's been.

This happened to me on both systems:

cMP 5,1 12C, 32GB Ram
nMP 6,1 10C, 64GB Ram

I updated all plug-ins to the latest version, no luck.
(Fabfiler, Soothe, Altiverb, Speakerphone, iZotope)

2019.10 CPU at 16-20%
2020.11/12 CPU at 36-45%

I then tried 2020.9, 2020.5 (which I skipped before) and they all have the increase in CPU usage.

What changed? I'd really like to upgrade because of melodyne and the broader support of AVID codecs.

Anyone with similar issues? Solutions?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I'm finding a little bit higher on my 2012 cheesegrater running OSX 10.13.6 than previous versions but not by much and certainly not seeing the numbers you are. You really should update your 5,1 to OSX 10.13.6. What are your cpu specs in each machine? Number of cores, speed? What's your system drive in the 5,1? Are both machines showing the same numbers?

Assuming you've done OSX upgrades from one version to another how did you do them? The 'Apple Way' where you install the new OSX over the old one? Or the 'Right Way' and do a clean install? Doing it the other way can cause all sorts of issues.

Click on the link in my sig to see my system specs.

Thank you for your reply.

5,1: 2x 3,46 ghz 6 Core
6,1: 1x 3 ghz 10 Core

The numbers are pretty much the same, the 6,1 handles the Session a little better.
I tried 10.13.6 on both machines and 10.14.6 on the 6,1.
All of them fresh installs, not migrated.

I suspect it might have something to do with the video engine.

What size session? Depending on how many fx plugins I have I can run 60+ track sessions with around 50% or less total cpu usage. Biggest cpu hogs are the Waves Abbey Road collection plugs. As long as cpu usage doesn't go into the red I really don't care how high things are. To tell the truth I never really paid attention to cpu usage when I ran PT 2019.6 (which was an upgrade from PT 11.3.2).

Default Re: PT 2020 CPU usage

Sorry for the late reply, I got caught up in work.

Gave it another try with 2021.3 and the issue is still there. Tried it with Big Sur as well.

Session is 31MB. CPU is at about 28-31 percent while with 2019.10 it is around 15%.

On one hand I'd like to think, well as long as the CPU can handle it, why do I care, but on the other hand, the session is indeed more responsive with playback and scrolling in PT 2019.10. I can definitely tell a difference, heck that's how I stumbled onto it in the first place.

Scrolling through video is certainly worse, although I think it might be a little better compared to 2020.11.

So, all the Plug-Ins are up to date, I tried 10.13.6, 10.14.6 and 11.2.3.

I'd really like to solve this, it kinda drives me crazy.

Thanks again!

You answered yourself - as long as the system can handle it and you're not getting any errors - why worry about it?
