Recording vinyl on Pro Tools part2
Hi, I posted a while ago about getting pro tools hooked up to my turn tables for recording. I am happy to announce that I have been successful in this! However I have an issue with the volume of the recordings..
I have... Turntable>Mixer>Old School Stereophonic Receiver>Pro Tools. I'm recording @ -16 as suggested by my pro tools teacher (if your wondering why I don't ask him I don't have class again until wednesday and I'm too impatient to wait) and while recording it sounds great coming through my head phones. When I'm finished recording and I play it back it is extremely low quality and muddy sounding. I tried to counter this by boosting my eqs and volume on the mixer and it did not boost the level on my recording, it only made it more muddy sounding. Is there a way I can fix this with what I have? Or do I need to purchase a preamp to boost the level into pro tools? Please help, and thanks for your time! P.s - To all hockey fans.. Penguins vs Sens 3rd OT OMG.. GO SENS! |

Re: Recording vinyl on Pro Tools part2
Well, I can't be certain, but my guess is you are not getting anything from using a mixer between the turntable and the receiver...
Unless it has specific turntable inputs like your receiver probably has.. The signal coming out of a turntable is not a typical line level signal.. It has been recorded using the RIAA curve and needs to be compensated with the correct RIAA preamp to remove the eq curve that has been applied See here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_equalization By going into the mixer first, you are mucking with an "incomplete" signal as if it were typical line level... So basically get rid of the mixer or maybe put it after the receiver if you really feel the need (to damage the signal further)... Also, as per another thread I read on this forum just in the last day or so, you can probably record into ProTools at a much higher level than raw tracks because that signal is already mixed and mastered. You shouldn't need to alter it too much.. run that by your -16 teacher...

And don't forget to hookup the ground wire from the turntable to the J33 (or any other scheme you use). |
