Default midi keyboard advice (buying today)

hi there all,
got to say i think Avid is second to none , Come on here for help and so far had immediate replys ,, Ok back to the question , Im wishing to go to gear for music or simmilar, even second hand on ebay maybe .

I want to purchase a midi keyboard so i can play around with midi rather than using midi editor all the time .

what do i need please ,, I have an HP laptop AMD 8 . has usb ports etc ,,
I have a focusrite 2nd gen that does not have midi in and midi out ,
I do not wish to spend much ,,

now question is do i need to buy a midi in and midi out box ?
or can i just plug into a usb port ? ive heard you can , just need second opinion here , The wife will slap me round the head if i spend money on something that does not work ( only softly she not that bad really )
again a massive thankyou for all the help
JIM

You don't need a MIDI to USB box assuming you're buying a MIDI keyboard from the last 15 years that has USB included.

If you want a really awesome MIDI Keyboard, the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol MK2 series are awesome - they are also expensive.

What board did you have in mind?

I have a list of MIDI controllers on Amazon at various price points if you don't know what you want https://www.amazon.com/shop/benonist...d=S4A6TXZQPEJ1

As long as they have USB, you're good to go - no MIDI cables or converters needed.

AKAI makes a mini MIDI keyboard that would be perfect if you aren't looking to spend a lot of money. Obviously, it's not very big, maybe 25 keys, I think? There's also MPC pads on it if you wanna add some drum parts.

But there are also tons of options available, sometimes too many.

As Benoni said, you won't need a MIDI interface.
