Default MBox 2 share drivers with other apps?

I'm sure I recall there was a way to allow an MBox 2 to share its drivers with other applications, but I can't find where to enable this. Ideally I want to use an existing MBox 2 to record some basic 2 track files into Cool Edit Pro which I have installed on a portable hard drive. I'd rather not have to install PT on this drive if I can avoid it, since I won't be multitracking at all.

You would need an ASIO compatible application and the stand-alone ASIO driver if you don't intend to install Pro Tools.
Cool Edit was never ASIO compatible ... so you're out of luck with that. Even it's successor Audition wasn't made ASIO compliant until version 2 IIRC.

Yes I recall it used to share OK with Sonar which must be because of Sonar's ASIO drivers. But will this just happen automatically? I seem to remember I had to do something to allow Sonar to "see" the MBox

No, that would be due to the Digi ASIO driver. Using the specific Digi driver is the key to optimal performance with 3rd party software and Digidesign hardware.

All ASIO compliant applications need to be set up individually in their preferences/device setup options.

In Sonar you must make sure Sonar is seeing the specific Digidesign ASIO driver and not a stock driver.
Options > Audio > Audio Options > General tab.

Good luck-
