are you sure it is not thin instead of trim...
When you tell Pt to thin the automation, it actually looks at all your break points and deletes some of them. (hopefully the not so necessary ones). It takes a little load of your CPU..

if you're are talking about the trim mode,
what it does is: it creates an offset of any previous written automation. for example, if you have a move on a track, but you realize it had to be the same move, but 5 db lower, that's how you use the trim.... got it??

I've never used this feature but it looks like (from reading p.394-396 in 5.1 Ref. Man.)
you can use trim in automation mode in order to create a "snpshot" of the playlist and add the automation to an empty playlist. Could be very useful. Maybe I'll have to try it.

Has anyone used this feature?
Do I get a gold star?
But my question would be:
Why not just duplicate playlist?

Yes.

Imagine that you had made a complicated series of moves on a vocal. You had lots and lots of points, bringing out a "t" here, ducking a loud vowel there etc. Now, later in the mix, you want the vocal a little louder. What do you do?

TRIM! Move all the points relative to eachother with the trim tool. I do it all the time. Without this feature, I'd be really stuck.

I have to totally get this.
I've only used the trim tool to trim regions.
You're saying I can TRIM the automation?

I take that back. I HAVE used trim for volume,
to bring up or down selection. Very useful.

Guys, I think itīs been a mistake with my question.

I was talking about the trim mode automation, not the trim Tool.

Itīs when, for example, you put in trim mode (Auto touch or Auto latch trim mode) the volume and the fader becomes yellow. I still donīt konw what is that.
