Rolling edit tool?

I'm on an old PT5 system, sitting down with Keane's book, learning stuff. When doing a punch recording on a track the new region is overlaid on the main region. Keane talks about starting a punch early and leaving a punch late so that you have more room to find the best transition area. So far, understood. However, then he goes on about how when you use the trimmer to trim the new overdub region sitting on top of the original track that it will reveal the original track.

That's not what happens for me. Instead, there is blank space and I have to then use the trimmer to enlarge the original track so that it meets the start of the overdub punch region. That also slightly - slightly changes where the two regions meet since you have to drag the first region to fill up all the blank space which will make you run into the 2nd region.

The way he worded it about trimming the overdub, 'reveal the original track' made me think that it's sorta like the rolling edit tool in Adobe Premiere. That tool alters both regions' in/out points so that they always butt up against each other.

I believe the reason it's doing this is because when overdubbing/punching, it divides the original, main region into two new subregions for before and after the punch. It's these auto-created regions that PT considers as never having what was pasted/recorded over the top of it. I wish there were a way to have the original region underneath it at all times instead of having to do so much trimming.

I wish there were a way to have the whole, original region underneath so that it will reveal it underneath my trimming of the punch region.

I also notice that auto-created regions aren't quite named the exact way as it says in the manual. Hmm... Oddness going on here. The PT6 manual seems to have corrected it.
