Dedicated Mac for CD Burning?
I was wondering if the best solution to some of the CDRW/SCSI issues with the new G4s might simply be to buy an older 6100 (~$200) or 7100 (<$300) and dedicate it for CDR burning. They've already got the built-in SCSI-2 and DB-25, and nobody seems to want Nubus Macs anymore.
I seem to be one of the few people who can get their G4 working with a CD burner (Orange Micro Ultra-SCSI + Yamaha 4416). Even it has some quirks - like I can't have the burner powered up when I boot. However, I burned a couple of CDRs last night (and copied some files back) with Toast 3.5.7 just fine - so at least it works. But I hate having to tie up my main machine for 30-45 minutes while I burn and verify 2 CDRs at 4x. I guess I'd have to network them - they do have built-in Ethernet and I'm pretty well-versed in TCP/IP networking - just not on the Mac platform. Anybody use this method? Is it more trouble than it's worth? Would adding Ethertalk (NOT Localtalk) present other compatibility issues? Are these bad choices for this purpose? ------------------ LW

Re: Dedicated Mac for CD Burning?
I run a Mix Plus on a G4 and have no problems burning CD's. I run the ATTO scsi card which I have a special cable for. I put the slower CD Burner and Jazz Drive on SCSI buss 2 and it works great. I prefer having it one computer since I can bounce my mix, open it up in Peak and Master, then burn the CD.

Re: Dedicated Mac for CD Burning?
as for the 7100, i use to burn cd's with masterlist on a 7100/80. it would only burn at 2x, the machine was just not fast enough. also, creating an image file is done in real time. burned a lot of coasters, the machine would occassionaly freeze. i NEVER want to see a 7100 again. maybe buy an 8600? i have one and it burns cd's great even at 4x. i'm going to dedicate this machine to cd burning, midi when i upgrade to a g4 or better. 8600's seem to be dirt cheap these days. ($800)

Re: Dedicated Mac for CD Burning?
Is the USB CDR writer any good compared to the SCSI?

Re: Dedicated Mac for CD Burning?
I've not heard of anyone burning CDs faster than 2x on a USB burner. If you're willing to take that long, I believe Toast 4.0 supports USB burners - at least a few of them.
