Default Vinyl "scratch"-like effect for PT?

Hi all,

I have had several users ask me to create in their songs effects like what happens when you "scratch" a record back and forth, as is frequently done in rap and hip hop music.
I can do this real-time with the scrub wheel of my ProControl, but I haven't figured out a way to do it as an effect that "prints".
I guess it's kind of like a pitch shift and time compression/expansion at the same time, but it's progressive.

Any ideas?

Serato's Scratch Special Edition sounds like exactly what you want:

Also take a look at Spectrasonics' Stylus:

Both are also on the Digidesign websites here:

The best way is to record a turntable.

If that's too much trouble, you might go buy a CD of turntable scratching samples.

I can't believe I'm pasting this again so soon

Scratching with audio.
Take a snippet of audio. Preferably a transient.
Duplicate it so now there's two of them next to each other.
Reverse the second one.
Now open Vari Fi and slow down the first one and then speed up the second one.
Now move them around until they sound right.

P.S. I didn't invent this. Someone on this board said it and I thought it was worth repeating.
Thanks

I think the thing to do these days is to use those CD scratchers which let you burn a CDR or material (such as your lead vocal) and scratch that just like you would a record. That's how I have seen it done on a lot of the really major major artists coming through. But I have no expereince actually using them, just listening to the tracks, which sound fantastic.

You can get a one-off (aka "dub plate") vinyl of your mix. A lot of places do this. This is how it's done.

Hi all,

Well, a CD of scratch samples won't work in my case, because they want their wocals "scratched". A dub plate is probably the purest and best way, but I don't have a lathe, and don't know anybody around town who does, plus the customers want "instant gratification". I'd like to get a lathe someday, though, and do it that way.

For now, it looks like I'll have to look at the Serrato plugin, or try the suggestion about about VariFi. I don't own that one, either, but maybe a trial will tell me whether it will work or not.

A lot of good suggestions.

Thanks, guys (and/or gals, of course)!
