I read security related news about all the operating systems and most of the security community seems the feel the MS has the best software patch program and the fastest response time.

At the last couple of Black Hat conventions its the Macs that have fallen first in the p0wn to 0wn contest yet most people still consider OSX to be more secure than Windows. Linux is considered to be secure yet who is going to write malware for a less than 1% of of the desktop market? As far as Linux Servers go there are specialist that specialize in "Hardening" Linux and many books on the subject. While Linux is pretty secure servers get hacked all the time.

I'm not saying MS couldn't do a better job or that they are not responsible for holes that are found. Its exceedingly difficult to write something thats easy to use, easy to modify and install 3rd party software into, browse the web AND be 100% secure. A very high percentage of exploits are web based and are due to loopholes in the protocols themselves as much as they are holes in the OS.

The single largest security hole in the system is the person behind the keyboard. A tremendous amount of malware is simply installed by the user. Something in the neighborhood of 75-80%. The next biggest area is outdated or no security software. The actual amount of "drive by" security risks are incredibly small. MS had a very secure OS. It was called Vista and most users felt it was too intrusive. Its a fine line between locking a OS down and making it easy to use.

I think MS Security Essentials is a great idea.
damn you said that well bro

I've been very happy with MSE.

It lets you exclude file types and locations. I exclude the DAE folder, the waves folder and the PACE AppData folder along with .AIFF and .wav files. There has been no apparant impact on performance since I did this.

Just moved to MSE after using Avast for years. I had to turn it off every time I launched PT. If not Waves would take forever to load those .dlls.
It did save me a few times before detecting infected disk-on-key drives.

Bob, I'm using your exclusions for folders except for the %appdata one - I'll need to do a search for the full pathname.
+ You've just reminded me to add exclusion for .wav and. aif files.

Thanks

One point...

I have read a couple of reports of MS Defragger scrambling things if there is a session open in Pro Tools when it runs.

And be aware that Norton 360 "takes over" MS Defragger so you'll need to be aware of any scheduling going on there...

I do not work for Avid (their loss)...my only relationship with Avid is that of a customer (when I'm not too poor to buy stuff, like now)...and that hot administrative assistant...that's more of a "thing" than a "relationship" (that should keep them guessing for a while...)

Just rockin'...what more is there?

I don't understand why anyone uses anything other than Microsoft Security Essential on a PT system. Are they surfing P*** sites during mixdown... chatting on Myspace while tracking drums... playing mafia games on FB in between vocal takes???? Why would you need to do anything on a PT system other than update the computer, and maybe ftp or send/receive session file(s) via biz email? MSE is more than sufficient for that, and as others have said it runs light.

Yes, until we have finally a faster-than-realtime bounce, it's good to play a round of CounterStrike while PT is bouncing a long track... Or even a short one, depending on your CS skills...

That was awesome. Maybe we'll get that feature in PT10.
