Default 5400/7200RPM Hard Drive Clarification

Does it matter (greatly) if I use a 5400RPM internal drive if my external drive that I'm recording to is 7000RPM? I have seen various posts, but it not clear.

Currently, I'm using a 5400RPM internal drive and a 7200RPM external recording drive and I'm not having any problems. My current recordings/mixes are simple, and I don't use a lot of plug-ins and effects.

However, as I start mixing a lot of tracks, can an 5400RPM HHD become a problem? I'm under the impression that the amount or memory is more critical? Thanks.

Max

your drives should ALL be a minimum of 7200 RPM. They perform much better than 5400 RPM drives. which should be obvious since they are faster

If it works, use it. Otherwise get a new disk. As far as i know the recommended 7200rpm minimum is old news, and disks are much faster today even though they are only 5400rpm.

The disks them selves are much faster because they have increased the amount of cache. Most of them now have 32mb standard. you can try the 5400 rpm drive but I personally would get the faster drive....if you run into tracking issues......you'll know why.....

The recording drive is the important one to be 7200 rpm. The system drive is less important(as evidenced by the number of people using laptops with success).
