I think that my Blye Sky Media Desk monitors translate really well in a acoustically treated room.
AND they are REALLY affordable.
Cheers!

We tried a few and ended with Dynaudio BM6a. Wonderful speakers. Flat. And clear way down.

Go for the new genelecs, like 8040a. They are fantastic.

So many great responses, I thought I was going to make my search EASIER! Ha!

THE QUESTION OF THE DAY IS WHERE IS THE BASS ROLL-OFF?

For example, Genelec 1030a's - I can get a pair for $900 used today - the are rated to 52hz, but they show a roll-off curve at 80hz. So, a subwoofer it would need Yoda. Anyone ever use these?

Adam's (A7's go to 40hz!) and Dynaudio (BM5a's go to 50hz) do have pairs that look great for around a grand a pair. Now, I wonder if I can really tell the difference on these two brands between 50hz and 40hz low end - probably. Are there any plus qualities above and beyond the norm between the two?

I can find the Genelec 8020's (55hz) for $800 a pair, but so far 8030's (58hz around $1400) and 8040's (48hz around $2000 a pair) are still expensive and need subwoofers - though that would be debatable on the 8040's - sometimes great designs can compensate a little against the chart rating.

Are you talking the JBL LSR4326P Pak or 8 Pak? They are around a grand, HUGE FEATURES, the low end specs are fabulous - down to 22hz effectively. How MUCH do you like them? What is the ear fatigue deal? Tell me! Tell me!

The Blue Sky's are attractive, they have an entry level system for around $500 and a much better system for around $1200 - but they DO need subwoofers.

I looked at the Focal's and they look to be high end audiophile speakers. They have one US Distributor and I can't find prices yet.

So far the running is, based on gut and specs:
JBL LSR4326P Pak
Adam A7's
Dynaudio BM5's
Genelec 8020a's

I wonder now if I would be better keeping my subwoofer, since most of these speakers are kind of light on the low end - especially against subharmonic enhancement. 40hz should be reasonable to cover 90% of most things, but the ratings can be deceptive against the actual eq curve on the speakers. If they are rated 40hz and the roll-off is 65hz, ya know?

I think the question answers itself, the subwoofer will have to stay with any of these small monitors.

So, if you had a subwoofer, which of the four monitor sets above would you buy?????

If you own any of these, what's up with the ear fatigue factor?

I grew up on JBL's, my dad had 3-way studio monitors with his McIntosh power amp - VERY flat sound, still has them today - they still sound flat as hell - excellent. I have 20 year old 3-way studio monitors on my stereo too, very flat accurate speaker.

Are you talking the JBL LSR4326P Pak or 8 Pak? They are around a $1000-$1300 on the street (depending on the 6 or the 8), HUGE FEATURES, the low end specs are fabulous - down to 22hz effectively. How MUCH do you like them? What is the ear fatigue deal? Tell me! Tell me!

I would go on ebay and find yourself some Event 20/20's and save your budget for plugins and other project related [bleep].

I will probably get murdered here, but the difference between Event 20/20s properly positioned and isolated, and $800 price point is marginal. I found some 20/20's on ebay for $400 bucks plus shipping, etc. they are loud as [bleep] and the bass player I play with loves em. He is a warwick artist and was actually trained by Victor Wooten, so perhaps that speaks to his taste and sound preference.

We are working with an 002 here, not an HD system, and most of us don't even work in 96. I strongly feel like for your price point, you can't go wrong with Event 20/20's. You can spend more if you want, but you may only get a marginal improvement unless you get into the thousands.
