I've seen smoke a few times on some of the 'cheap' PCs I've built. You know, the ones with a $22 case that comes with a power supply. Anyway, the power supply has always been the answer. Some of the electrolytic capacitors actually exploded for some reason in a few of these power supplies.

No damage was caused to any of the other PC components. I just replaced the bad power supplies and all was good again.

Nope, I opened the case and took off the fan, the CPU smelled like smoke. I'm worried that the memory slot smelled like smoke too. The power supply still works.

Hi Stone:

I would suggest you involve a professional tech to repair your computer, but I would also take comfort in the likelihood that it is not your CPU. Chances are it is a lesser component.

A visual inspection SHOULD reveal the offender. Smoking components are usually (but NOT always) easy to spot. Look for a grayish oxidation and a visual crack in the component's case. Also, a BAD meltdown will usually leave its mark on the surrounding circuit board.

Best of luck!

I have heard of computers frieing up because of RAM Chips put in backwards...but some people have forced them in and the computer will fry...if there is smoke "Certified Tech" not "DUC".
