Default iMac and Digi003

Hi All,

I've decided to move from the PC world to Apple and i'm thinking of buying
a new iMac 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo...now evidently there may be issues with the firwire bus and since i'm using a Digi003 I thought it may be a good idea to see if there were any known problems ???

Anybody heard of any issues ???

Also should I move onto Leopard or stay with Tiger for now ??? ...my gut tells me Tiger.

I've been using a Digi 002R with an Imac G5 for a few years without a problem. I also daisy chain the firewire through the unit and never have any issues. The Digi goes first with the drive chained from that.

I have an iMac 2.33 C2D, but its the previous generation, not the new aluminum iMac. But I've used my iMac with the 002 and 003 and not really had any problems with firewire. i also have a firewire external HD, and I did have issues with that, but as far as I can tell the problems were just within the drive itself, not because of any firewire bandwidth issue or anything.

Also, I'd recommend going to Leopard. Again, I've been running Leopard on my iMac for a while and running PT in Leopard since it was available. It's been relatively solid for me. Problems come up from time to time, but that's just always the case. I can't say that I've experienced any more issues running PT in Leopard than I did in Tiger.

What kind of issues have you heard about with the firewire bus? Just bandwidth stuff?

As far as I know, you won't be able to use Tiger on a new iMac anyway. They all ship with Leopard now but this won't be a problem with PT 7.4.2 and above.

I've used an iMac (on Leopard) successfully with a 003 and a FW800 hard drive, though I've heard some people have issues with combining FW400 and 800, in which case you can always daisy chain instead.

Evidently the new iMac's are using a "Agere" firewire chipset which have been fairly problematic...since the Digi003 connects via firewire this could really be an issue.

Just wanted to see if anybody had heard of anything....i'll take a look around :)

Regarding Leopard....is it any slower than Tiger ??? ....i'm a firm believer in going with something that works rather than whats shiny and flashy...if PT will perform better on Tiger, i'll go with that rather.

Hi,

I've just got a new iMac(C2D 2.4Ghz) and running 003R with no issues so far. Leopard is great. Just make sure you have the right PT version, update all the plug ins AND firmware and you'll be fine.
Good luck.

if you are tracking to an external firewire HD, you need to make sure that the firewire HD has the Oxford 911, 912, or 924 chipset in it. Otherwise it will give you hella problems.
