You have a red and a black wire. Red is + and black is - or ground, coming from the Avid unit. On your new fan you will have 3 wires. All grey i think.. Just try out a combination, using your fingers to hold the wires together - you cant get any electric shock since the current is so small.

When you hit the right combination it works. Since its only 1 redundant wire, it takes about 30 seconds to find out which one it is, just by trial and error.

:)

Nice thanks
Cheers

Ill keep in touch

Default Is the Avid IO fan quieter than the 192 fan?

Out of three wires it takes 5 seconds to find the two that work. Then it takes another 5 seconds to find out if the fan blows air in or out. Then it takes 10 seconds to solder the wires an another 10 seconds to wrap some isolating tape around :)

DONE!

It was very fast, about 20 minutes to make this fan replacement.

Everything it's running perfect, no fan error (till now)!

I just want to thank you all for all the help/info.

Cheers

ps:If anyone need some pictures, just pm me

Fixed my HD IO with the silenx fan http://www.silenx.com/quiet.fans.asp?sku=efx-08-15

Most time went into replacing the connector but it was doable, I ordered some spare 4-pin extension cables so I have the original fan intact if I need to reinstall it.

The end result is stunning. Nearly dead silent from somewhat annoyingly loud, my quite quit AC now overpowers the tiny fan noise left. Shame on Avid for leaving such a design flaw into their premium product.

Upping this thread since some of us still use old HD Omnis.

Do you know where to buy Silenx IXP 11-14 in Europe ? I can't find any that ships to France (except from the US with massive shipping prices).

I tried replacing it with a Noctua NF A4x10 which had the same characteristics but it gives a Fan error (even if it runs). Tried changing the polarity, letting it run for some time, nothing works.
