Default Roland Keyboard Midi connect problem

I'm trying to connect a Roland D-20 via the midi connection to my Project Mix I/O with PT M-Powered 7.3.1cs7... On a midi track, on the input line, I see the Roland D20 but in parenthesis, I see (no line activated) or something of that sort... I also see the same message on the output line. I've spent 4 hours trying to figure out how to activate the Roland... If I record activate a midi track, I can't hear anything, but I notice that midi notes are playing, but get stuck and I see the sound constantly playing even though I'm no longer touching a key.. Any help on this activating the Roland would be a big help.. thank you
