Default Can't record or hear a click track

I'm using a Lenovo530 PC with WIN 10, and a Behringer 404 interface. Installed PtoTools-First and Behringer drivers. Recorded vocal mic, and instrument. Played back OK through monitor and headphones. Good so far. Then deleted the project and decided to demo different DAW (Waveform), but returned to ProTools. Now in new ProTools project, can't record, and can't hear clicktrack.

Did not unistall Waveform. Did reinstall ProTools and Behringer driver. Still can't record (no signal showing) or hear clicktrack from ProTools. But I can hear the mic through the monitor - I'm guessing that means the interface is recognized through the PC and/or ProTools, so I must have casued an alteration to some setting somewhere.

Can anyone help?

Welcome.
Pressing "N" during PT launch gives you a chance to select playback engine. Try that.

Tried that, but gave same result as choosing engine from Setup. I was always able to select the engine ASIO Behringer engine. Something else seems to be interfering and I don't know what.

Not sure if you can help further. ProTools sees the Behringer - it recognizes it has 4 inputs and outputs. When I select ASIO engine, the click track volume meter does not show, although track is "playing". If I select Windows Audio, the volume meter does show. Same result when I tap on the mic - no input meter with ASIO, but meter OK with Win Audio. Lost all my hair now -pulled it al out......

It's very difficult to guess what's wrong or give any advice. There are so many unknown variables, and to be honest, PT First is not recognized as a very reliable piece of software around here, at least for any "serious" kind of work.
For playing around on a amateur level there are better DAWs out there, like Abelton, Reason and many more.

Pro Tools has always been a studio multitrack record and mix -type of application, and we usually advice people that if they really think that PT is what they need, it's better to start with the PT 30-day free full trial instead of the very limited, and perhaps not as reliable PT First.

If I were you, I'd perhaps try one of the many free audio apps out there to make shure the Behringer works first, then try again w/PTF.

There are some simple stuff that you need to check, like, windows should not be set to use the Behringer. That will break PT functionality.

All basic advice and troubleshooting tips are found here:

Step #1:
Open Windows Sound Properties and make sure that Windows is using the on-board sound card as the "default playback device". If Windows uses the 404, that may lock out the hardware(so Pro Tools cannot access it).
