Default creating submix, output to track vs bus

I just noticed you can send the output of a track to another track.

I had been using one of the available busses, renaming it and sending output to that.

Is there advantage to doing it one way or another?

I guess at some point you run out of the provided busses... should they be used for something else?

Its the same, either way. Any time you route audio INSIDE Pro Tools, you are using a bus(and yes, you CAN run out, but its not like the old days when we only had 32 buses

You may have noticed there is only five 'Insert' slots for plugins per track. By sending the output of one track straight to another, you're gaining another five Insert slots into the signal chain. This is one reason to do it that way.

Generally speaking I use busses for submixes and/or for Auxillary tracks with FX inserted, which enables multiple tracks simultaneous access to that/those FX or submix by 'bussing' them in. Using busses is also handy for creating separate headphone mixes for multiple musicians particularly during the recording process though there are limitations depending on hardware I/O availability.

Both ways have advantages depending on the demands of a specific project. The ability to route both ways is there for good reason.....flexibility.

...and if you check your mix window view settings you may notice that you can show another five (F-J) inserts per track if you want to.

Yes indeed. Each track has 10 inserts and 10 sends(certain types of tracks have no sends at all, like a Master Track)

Lol. it's so long ago that I've needed any more than five (I only have A-E showing) I forgot about the other five.

So if you want 20 or more inserts......hehe
