Hi, I am ready to rebuild my PC around my MOTU 1248. I want to use the thunderbolt connection but don't find many motherboards that support thunderbolt 2. I did find an adapter on sweetwarter.com to go from thunderbolt 1/2 to usb3, do these work well and if so then what would be my best option for a new motherboard, processor, ram and drives?
thanks!

My Gigabyte z390 Desgnare is working without issue with my Avid Thunderbolt Native box which is Thunderbolt 1 as far as I know. I use the "Official" Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (Did you know it works in both directions? At least that's in it's description) and Apple 2M Thunderbolt 2 Cable. This is the best advice I can give you.

Obviously its time to make an upgrade. I have 24gig of ram now (6 slots, 4gig each). I could probably make that 48, but I can't imagine what I'd need that much ram for! So I'm thinking 4 slots for 32gig would be more than enough. Heck, 24gig has been just fine.

I was about to make a new build, but just to try, I figured, why not just order 48g of RAM & see if it works on my i7-920. IT WORKED! So I then ordered an i7-990x bumping me up to a standard 3.5g Clock which is .1 under what I was OC'n the 920 @, & 2 more Cores/4 more threads; I also grabbed a new Noctua DH N15 Cooler (which I really didn't need because my CoolerMaster V8 still works great. But needless to say, I'm going to wait on the next build, plus I'm curious to see about this new Ryzen coming out next Month, so I may still do it soon...

The pic showing the threads in the session, that particular session is massive with a little over 100 tracks, including VI's & of course many plugs; I would run it at 128, but on the 920 it hover at 80+% & peak 100% here & there. Now I can run it at 64, & a big difference in where it's landing % wise!..

I've read about some anguish people have had in the past with Asus. How is your build going? I'm doing something similar, parts and all but was thinking of going 19 9980xe and an Asus Prime X299 Deluxe 2 MOBO. Everything else (save the case) is the same as you.

Mine is holding great! With what you're doing, you should be good switching the MOBO as well; as long as it's the correct socket, all else should be fine; you may have a few driver/BSOD issues initially with the switch, but nothing that shouldn't iron itself out...

I just realized what you were/are getting. So I don't know if your question was to me or not, nor do I know what you're currently running! That's a heck of a processor! You should wait a few more days for the Ryzen CPUs...
