Default Trim Tool Problems

I'm fairly new to Pro Tools; been using Cubase since I started recording.

Having an issue where I track different guitar takes on the ONE track and the trim tool trims ALL OF MY CLIPS on that track leaving the track completely black where I trimmed. Now, I don't know why this only happens sometimes on certain tracks.

The guitar track above (where I duplicated the 2nd track from) does not have this issue when trimming the most recent recorded track.

I hope I explained myself well enough. I'm tracking over current clips and wanting to only trim the clip on top.

Please help. This is all too frustrating.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, You may have them grouped, in which case all of the tracks in the group will be edited together unless the group is deactivated. If that's not the case, could you post a screenshot?

You need to trim the tail of the clip on the left out to where you want the second clip to start. Pro Tools doesn't keep clips layered on top of each other on a track the way some others like Cubase do. When you record or paste on top of an existing clip, the section of the first clip that's underneath goes from the track and if you want it you need to trim out the head or tail of the clip you recorded over.
The way to do the sort of thing you are looking for is by using playlists to record takes.
Too long to explain here, search some videos on it so you can look at it while at your computer.
Cheers.

Thanks for the info. Yeah while I was looking up pro tool tutorials, I came across the playlist feature which is fantastic.

What's strange though is that I did the same thing (recording over existing clip) on a different track and I was able to trim the most recently recorded track while preserving the bottom clip. I even tested that theory and it checks out. Couldn't find the problem at all.

Anyways, learning about playlists and using the selection tool to designate where I want to record helps out a lot. Not too ideal for me because I was a heavy Cubase user, but I'll adjust!

Thanks a lot!

Hi, yeah I came from being a longtime Cubase user so it sounded like you might be as well. Playlists is a bit like the lanes option CB brought it but it's better and easier to use once you get the hang of it. Don't know why your other track is behaving that way though.
Must be some setting somewhere. Let me know if you find it.
Cheers.
