..ah, Ive been having just this issue with a WD-Black 4TB drive for the last few months on Yosemite....thought it was one of my Macs dying.....anyone found a fix?

Good idea.
If they're there, the solution could be as simple as a "Mount all drives"-script in your startup items list.

They are not. They don't even show up under system info. It's like the drive doesn't even exist. PC-users can work around it by modifying the BIOS settings (see the quoted link on the WD site). There's no solution for mac users AFAIK. WD also never releases firmware updates so I guess it's an annoyance we have to live with.

The drive is totally fine and fast otherwise. This is a problem with a buch of other drives as well (see here https://discussions.apple.com/message/28590445#28590445). Mainly the very large ones (6TB and 8TB).

If someone finds a solution, please post it here.

well, I just cleaned up very well all for bays in my Mac Pro, switched the positions of the drives and now they mount no problem... I even have two different SSDs with Yosemite and Sierra and when I switch them (by restarting) all drives mount fine... no idea why but it's working...
