Default Anyone else think PT7 sucks??

probably not, i know, but myself and three other top film-sound editors aren't impressed at all. from crashes when importing audio, to crashes when grouping or un-grouping tracks to not being able to cut-and-paste timecode properly, (a function which we used probably several times a minute back in PT6) and a few other niggly things. we're all on cs 4 or 5, so we're not lagging behind either.

just thought i'd have a moan - it makes me feel better, after the third crash of the day.

ta,

steve little.

Have you tried all the steps in the OS X Setup and General Troubleshooting thread yet?

Can you be any more specific about what causes a crash? If we get enough info to track down the problem, we'll quite likely be able to do something about it.

More information about your system would also be helpful - number and types of drives being used, any attached peripherals, etc.

Also - and I can't stress this enough - have you double checked that all installed plug-ins are Pro Tools 7 compatible? Even if you're not using them in a session, just having them in the plug-ins folder can cause very strange behavior.

troll

1st post here - totally negative

Have you considered your computer is somewhat underpowerd?
Any possibility of operator error?
Any possibility of plugin conflicts?
Any possibility of configuration errors?

Instead of saying PT7 sucks, how about asking a question that might resolve your probelm...

Are you prepared to do what you have to do make PT7 work great?

troll indeed!!

thanks for that. so cruel. i'm going to have to hide back under my bridge. all i was wondering was if others had had the same problems.

but i had used a copy of the offending session (without the audio, so it's not a corruption there) and opened it on a totally separate system with a nice shiny G5 (so it's not my sweet little G4), with the same crashing result when i try to ungroup the already grouped tracks. and it's not my system/preferences etc as i can group and ungroup other audio in other sessions without crashing. it's just the reels i'm trying to reconform that keep crashing. maybe i've grouped too much audio?? (two 20 minute chunks). i also imported the tracks to a whole new session to see if the session itself was corrupted. which it wasn't-it still crashed. the only plug-ins i've got are the waves ones.

yes, it could be user error. but the users are the harry potter sound designer, the batman sound editor and supervisor, the sound editors on king arthur and troy, the mixer on troy etc etc. maybe we're all just dumb. or maybe, just maybe, some little parts of this software suck.

many thanks,

troll

Are all your problems related to post specific tasks or workflow?
Maybe someone in the post forum who is on 7 (I'm still on 6.9) and similar workflow might be of help.

Dear Mr. Little,
Since you name dropped, I and other Major Hollywood Mixers, Sound Supervisors and Editors find PT 7 rock solid stable! So there goes your little theory.

Sometimes our egos make us think we can do nothing wrong, that it has to be everyone else.
