LaCie d2 52x32x52 CD-RW. Just make sure your media is certified for the faster speeds.

I would recommend getting a DVD±R/W drive as DVD blanks are real cheap now and you can do CDs as well.

I bought a Pioneer DVR-107D (Black) to replace the Sony CD-R/W in my Mac and am well happy.

Check out xlr8 and macspeed for more ideas.

The DVD Burners are cheap enough except for 1 problem.

They burn CD's a little slower. So if you burn alot of CD's and need them fast you might be better off with a CD Burner.

I also put the new Pioneer DVD Burner in my G4 and it works great.

thanks for the replies but i need to know what's going to do audio as well as the plextor. (low error, low jitter, redbook type stuff).

i can just go out and buy any old drive for data

perhaps i'll just get the plextor fixed...

I may have a solution. I need details on the style and type you have. I have two of them here.
Email me directly if you need to..

I also recommend LaCie, Lite-On, LG Electronics or Samsung
Rip(extract) speeds are good, big cache (true burn speeds), throughput(s) are excellent on all!!! Not too bash Sony but they die too often for me!!

I'd go with a new drive, unless you're using MasterList. If you're using MasterList, you'll need to get a vintage drive that's supported by that software.

I wouldn't have an old drive repaired (unless by repair, they mean replace with a new one - as is often the case). Tolerances, etc., on the old drive are going to get funky over time. It simply won't work as well as it ded when it was new.

Buy another Plextor. The word I got from reliable sources, people that build duplicators and deal with burners all the time, is that DO NOT use a DVD burner for professional audio since they are tweaked for DVDs and will cause errors with audio.. I just went through this and had a bunch of sample burns from different burners including DVD Burners tested.

I've found through experience that the built in Pioneer dvd burner in my G5 will often turn out coasters when trying to burn audio CDs. I've never had ONE coaster when using my firewire La Cie. So the built in only burns DVDs from now on - which it does very well - no DVD coasters so far.
