I agree, I bought one and returned it. The headphone amp gain is not very loud with ProTools and the gain crack was there to... other than that, it was good enough. I might try another unit.

PTLE9 is great but until it goes X64 I'll stick with Sequoia 12 or Cubase 6

I asm able to record directly into the PT session and not have to deal with the Control Panel at all.

Once the CP is configured you can work without it being booted.

I did not find the mBox 3 Pro input levels unsuitably low.

Exclamation Re: PT MBox 3 preamp levels too low?

I own a Mbox2. It's 3+ years old. I was having the exact same problem. I've been recording dialogue for the past 3 weeks and had to crank my gain knob almost to the max just to get close to yellow levels. I know that before this, I did not ever have to crank it that loud just to get good levels with normal-speaking/tone dialogue.

and wait, it gets worst...Yesterday, the whole thing craps out on me. I turn on phantom (with gain knob almost up to where it's been for the past couple weeks) and it starts clipping like crazy. So I had to turn it almost completely down and it was still clipping here and there. So to continue with my ADR session I had to turn on the pad and just ride the knob until the dialogue wasn't clipping anymore...

Today, I've been hearing random pops, clicks, etc. too...i'm doomed

Has anyone had this problem?? I'm pretty certain it's an internal issue with my preamp but just wanted to double check with the rest of you guys. And if I'm right, does anyone have a remedy since I probably don't have a warranty (unless I do? like I said it's probably 3-5 years old)

Default Re: PT MBox 3 preamp levels too low?

did anyone find a resolution to this?

i believe my preamps WERE working properly. i could turn the gain knob to 40% and get a good vocal level with an NT1A

i recently rebuilt my mac and installed the latest driver (march 2014) and now i have this damn problem

the gain now needs to be around 95% to get the same volume as it was previously.

i plugged in a old ribbon recently and couldnt get any gain out of it. i needed to turn the gain to 97% to get a partial gain out of it. the volume is so touchy - it is like the gain is all stacked into the last 10% of the knob. i also noticed with the ribbon i was getting terrible electronic whine at 97% - so the mic was unusable with the mbox3pro preamps. i used a GAP PRE73 and it was fine.. so something screwed with the preamps on the mbox3pro.

i also note that i have used other ribbons when the preamps WERE working properly without issue.

any advice from AVID? are avid still selling the MBOX3PRO? any chance of an upgrade?

cheers

i have also noticed that the last 2% of the knob makes the volume jump a huge amount.

maybe i should make a video showing the problem on youtube so you guys can see what i mean.

A lot of the M-Audio branded gear was the same way, you got 90% of the gain in the last 10% of the knob. I think that part is normal with the type of potentiometer they used.
