Are you archiving to DVD?

if so

what media is working most consitenly and best for you?

i have to say...memorex is a formula for coasters from my experience.

i used to order the tayoyudens from a vendor

but recently couldn't wait and had to experiement.

what do you do?

Once a project is completed, I burn 2 sets of DVDs. I use Tai Yuden discs, purchased from Mediasupply.com and can't remember the last time I made a coaster. I burn with Toast using their "spanning" technology. I have restored projects as old as 11 years without issue.

That's what I do.

Hi!

I too use Tai Yuden discs from Mediasupply. I don't use the spanning technology, but I do make two sets. I have not had an error in read or write and I have restored as far back as '96.

I remember using Exabite tapes with retrospect and Mezzo. What a joke those methods are. I can't imagine a restore going well from a rig that uses ancient hardware .

Cheers! Rubicon

ALSO

can someone chime in and give me the 411 on the difference between minus and plus R

i'm using my G5 and always was told minus R

have the requirements for DVD media evolved to accepting both now or what

what is the difference by the way?

I never use DVD for archives. Maybe that's because most of my projects are about 30 gigs so even single-layer blu-ray is not enough for fitting a project on a single disc which I consider mandatory for any chosen backup medium.

Therefore, I backup on external hard drives. Those should last at least as long as optical discs, and currently it's a whole lot cheaper and faster than burning discs. And takes less shelf space too, because one drive holds about 16 projects.

im not sure of the actual technical difference, but minus R is a bit more universal with other drives and set top/component DVD players

ive never had a problem using plus R discs on DVD drives, but some movies ive burned to plus Rs dont play on video DVD decks.

i usually use tayo yudens as well, but have used sony & fuji discs from office depot when in a pinch, and those have always held up. ive got data CDs that are sony/fuji and are 8-9 years old that I can still pull WAV files from.

i personally do all my permenant backups to hard disk, but ill burn a client copy on DVD.

I don't even burn a client copy unless they pay me by the hour. Hard drive copy I make for free.

If you're interested in non DVD archiving... here's my system.
I use an external FW AIT tape drive. Backs up 80 gig uncompressed using Retrospect. 2 AIT tapes per project... keep one at the studio.. one at the house.
I've got a 8 core Mac with 4 drive bays so I also do the the following.
"Save Copy In" (the consolidated mix files only) to a 750 gig SATA "Archive" drive. No software needed to restore. Keep a text file handy to keep track of what's on the drive. Insert archive drive in the Mac only while archiving.
Once the drive I full, print the text file and store with the drive.
