A few basic HD questions
If I get an HD rig with a 192 and connect my old 882/20 via the legacy port, will the stuff connected to the 882 be delay compensated?
If I have a 192 can I connect a Apogee AD8000 SE to the legacy port? If so will those I/O's be delay compensated? Deciding whether I should keep my AD8000 SE to use with w/the 192. Thanks for a definitive answer on this. Finally upgrading my Mix rig! |

Re: A few basic HD questions
You can connect the AD 8000. I'm not sure if it's the legacy port you would use, but I've been running someone's studio for years and he has it hooked up with two 192s.

Re: A few basic HD questions
I believe you can have delay compensation, but for 3rd party converters, you must manually adjust the delay time within the software..

Re: A few basic HD questions
So if I ditch the AD8000 and just use the 192 and 882/20, will the I/O on the 882 be delay compensated?
Maybe someone from Digi would be kind enough to clarify this. |

Re: A few basic HD questions
Yes, it varies. For example, Apogee's implementation of X-HD cards will make Protools pretend you have an HD192 interface connected. So your ADC is different than 192's, you have to adjust according to the difference.
Digidesign ADC has been designed to be used with Digidesign interfaces. Nothing wrong with that. You can always turn it off and adjust manually, which is not so great. IMO, better have Digidesign interfaces and connect Apogees via AES/EBU -- that way you can have both (Digidesign ADC and Apogee converters).

Thanks for the reply. Part of my upgrading to HD is for the piece of mind knowing all my outboard is delay compensated. So I think I will sell the Apogee. Anyone know if the I/O on the 882 connected to the legacy port will be delay compensated? Once more ques: on the 192 can I have 8 analog devices connected AND one stereo digital device? |

Re: A few basic HD questions
All HD interfaces are 16 in 16 out, so you can in fact have 8 analogue in and 8 digital in. There are multiple configurations available, but maximum i/o at once is always 16/16 on all interfaces. Exception to this rule is the HD96i interface only has 16/2, but the connection port would still allow 16/16.
So, if one had 16 apogee inputs and 16 apogee outputs, then the safest way to connect would be to buy an HD192 *digital* interface and then connect the apogees to that via AES/EBU. Then one would have Apogee AD/DA and Digidesign ADC working perfectly together.

That's great to know. Right now on my Apogee and 882, if I connect a digital device I loose the analog I/O on that interface. Good info! Still wondering if an 882 connected to the legacy port is compensated. Anyone know? |

Re: A few basic HD questions
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the legacy port add more simultaneous I/O at 48k?
If you took a Y cable, 2 888's, and connected them to the legacy port on your 192... you should get another 16 ios(available only at 48k or 44.1k) in addition to the 16 ios of your 192 interface. You could take AES from your apogees and run it into the 888's, leaving you with 16 available channels on your 192. With the use of a Y cable, this means a total of 32 channels, assuming you have 2 8 channel or one 16 channel legacy interface. |
