Default Upcoming Waves Vocal Rider

Just came accross this :

http://www.macmusic.org/news/view.php/lang/en/id/8550/

Interesting. Might make life easy at times.. I know the folks in HD land have something similar they've been discussing for a couple of months.. similar name too.. I wonder if Waves bought it off of the developer.

Any thoughts?

Edit: http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread...ht=vocal+rider is the link to the other thread. Different product though I think.

'One small step for an Israeli company, one giant leap for the recording industry.'

Hmmm, I am more or less impressed, but wouldn't run to the Waves site to buy it. For music mixing no, for voice over mixing maybe.

Well at least it will be cross platform.

Great. Yet another way to turn musical decisions over to a soulless machine. Should save time for announce tracks, though.

according to mundoz (the developer) they bought a unit from him and that was the last he heard from them.

the original wave rider has always worked on LE.

the waves will be a little different in that it has a sidechain.

I wondered about that. I know that Mundoz has been on here for awhile with his offering.. Maybe things will get spicy?

Sidechain will be nice. I just want to see how it works though. I have to say that right now at least, I'm not sure just how much I would use this.

Time will tell on both I reckon...

Peace!

I tried the mundoz Wave Rider plug-in. Gave it a good go on several occasions. It was very tricky getting it to work right, but once I did, it definitely did what it claims to do. The problem is, what it does doesn't sound natural. You'd think that having your gain ridden automatically would be great. But it ain't. Machines can't hear too good, I guess. There's just so much about hearing that is subjective and subject to all sorts of perceptual vagaries, that those kinds of adjustments need to be made by perceivers, not by algorithms.

Waves' idea is similar, and based on the same root idea, but controls gain based on the relationship between two signals, I guess, rather than by just the one being controlled. That might work better for some kinds of situations. It's still probably not the way to achieve the most sonically pleasing results, but it might get the job done quickly when that's a higher priority than sounding great.

So wait...is its primary goal trying to get a vocal track that wouldn't require compression or what not? Like, so you don't clip the meter when tracking? I know it's the more old school analog approach they're going after, but I don't know if I'd rely on a plug to do it for me. I just make sure when tracking that I'm nowhere near the red, have a talented vocalist, and not-so-hot levels, unless it's a particular effect I'm going for.

Not for tracking, no. It would have no way of knowing what the level was going to be during tracking. It's strictly for mixing, to keep a lead instrument, vocal, or announcer track automatically higher in level than the band or music bed.
