surround sound mixing

This is my first post. I know, I know. Thank you. I will probably hear it cuz I'm sure it's been discussed but... I have digi002 rack with protools 6.2.2. Is it possible to mix in surround sound? From what i've read so far, it looks like you can only do it with the HD systems. Is this the case? Also, is there any upgrades available for free, or do I have to purchase the next disk?

Mixing in surround requires either an HD or an older TDM rig. LE will only do stereo. Sure, you could route certain tracks or subgroups out of your 002 to a 5.1 monitoring system and hear audio coming from all around you, but without the surround panners inside Pro Tools it's basically useless. You would have very little control. At work, I mix in surround using a 002R, but I'm using Logic Pro 7 as my DAW.

I believe the upgrade from Pro Tools 6.2.x to 6.4 is free, but I'm positive the upgrade from 6.4 to 6.7 costs money -- $75. Go to the Digidesign home page, click on Support and then click on Downloads.
