Default Mic guitar cabs- XY or Near/Far? What do you use?

Post your thoughts. When you mic a guitar cab do you do XY or near/far or both? I have had a lot of success w/ near/far but a friend just turned me on to XY. Let's hear your ideas!

Default Re: Mic guitar cabs- XY or Near/Far? What do you use?

Hi There,

Last weekend I tracked some guitars and was happiest with using three mics!

- Shure KSM32 about 0.6 Meters (Approx. 2 Feet) infront of cab raised up a couple of inches or cm's
- Shure SM57 about 1 inch (2 cm) from Cone Straight
- Sennheiser MD421 as close as possible angled

Then i mix the signals together depending on my needs in the mix - but check out phasing when you place mics in different proximity!

Thats about it!

To make the sound as wide as possible i'll record the guitar line twice (or more...) and then pan the signals. When recording metal guitars or just guitars that need to be ultra tight and present in the mix i'll stand the cab infront of a wooden wall and place the mics the same way as mentioned above! Except I use a shure beta56...

thats all...
Mark
