Default Errors in GDI.EXE & Access Violation

I've been getting random Access Violations as well as errors in GDI.exe (white screen, an error has occurred, blue screens, and usually I get Protoolsle has caused an error in GDI.exe, Protoolsle will now close.) this has happened on 2 clean installs of Windows ME. All I do is open a new session, and insert a couple tracks, I'm not using any read-only files. I'm not even recording, I just insert the tracks and let it sit. Sometimes it takes 1 minute sometimes it takes 5 minutes.

Antec Performance Plus1080 SOHO File Server case
Asus A7V 333
AMD Athlon T-Bird 1000
512 MB PC-2700 RAM (Mushnik, 1 Stick)
Zalman CNPS3100+ Fan w/Flower Heatsink
Digi 001 PCI Slot 3
Western Digital 60GB HD
Radeon 7500 AGP Video Card
Pro Tools 5.1.1.331

I have RAID disabled & USB disabled. CPU runs at about 40-43 degreese. This error has come up with both a Voodoo5 5500 PCI video card, and the Radeon 7500 that I'm using now. These are my IRQ's:

IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard OK
IRQ 2 Programmable interrupt controller OK
IRQ 6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 10 CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device OK
IRQ 10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering OK
IRQ 10 Digidesign Digi 001 OK
IRQ 11 RADEON 7500 OK
IRQ 11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering OK
IRQ 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 14 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo) OK
IRQ 15 VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo) OK

Hopefully there's a way to resolve this without spending more money... I've replaced almost every part in this stupid setup since I started... Thanks!

By the way, I've been searching Access Violation on the board for a few days and nothing seemed to help. Thanks

GDI.exe has something to do with the memory.. try running each RAM stick seperately and see if you have any problems..

I also re-seated the RAM into the 2nd slot, something I got off support.microsoft.com, didn't help.

Not trying to be smart but you might want to try ditching ME and upgrade to XP. XP is a much more stable operating system.

With regards to the Access Violation I have had that myself and is a result (generally) of a corrupted preference file.

You'll find this info and how to correct it in the answerbase on the digi site.

However I've just added the quote here for you

"Should you run into an "Access Violation" or for any reason experience an error during system or session launch, you may need to trash your preference file. Like many applications Pro Tools keeps a record of your most recently used files, your settings, your preferences in a separate file. Occasionally this file gets corrupted and must be recreated. This file is called "Pro Tools 5_1 Preference.ptp." It resides in the directory \Documents and Settings\'username'\Applications\Digidesign of your boot disk (where 'username' is your Windows login username). Should you need to find this file and cannot, please consult Windows 2000 Help for instruction on how to Show Hidden Files. If you still cannot find the file, use Windows search for files or folders feature to find the file."

Cheers

I tried deleting the preferences, but it still happens. I also got a Kernel32.dll so I guess I'll upgrade to XP. Thanks for replying.

What it does sound like if you're getting the kernel32.dll error, is the need to re-install your operating system. Not nice I know but it is the only way I know of to repair kernel errors other than getting a good copy of that dll file.

Cheers
