Default Aaf 4gb+

Hi all,
Just received a set of AAFs that are each 4GB+ per reel.

If I try to "Import Session Data" I get, "Could not compete Import Tracks Command because an unexpected error blah blah blah"
When I tried to "Open Session" I crashed.

I didn't even think it was possible to make an AAF larger than 2GB, or was that only OMF?

Picture cutting room is shut down, so a re-export is impossible.
If I can find a MC system somewhere would I be able to open this AAF and re-export in smaller chunks, or is the AAF size not the problem?

Thanks for any ideas!!

Best,
Joe

Has to be smaller than 2GB just like OMF. Ask for AAF with separate media if it´s very big or split further.

Picture department closed, Avid returned; I think they're gonna need to fire it up again.
Thanks for the confirmation, Frank!

It' s really beyond me why AVID has allowed MC to create OMFs larger than 2GB for at least the last 1.5 decades while not supporting that size at the same time.

did you sort it out, or are you still screwed? I have an AVID here, maybe I can open it and re-output as multiple OMF's for you.

cheers

I believe it has more to do with the individual audio files rather than the size of the AAF or OMF. WAV and AIFF files (including those embedded in an OMF/AAF) must be <2GB. MXF files can be bigger. Pro Tools 8 and higher can support WAV, AIFF and MXF files up to 3.4 GB each.

Dan Snow at Anarchy Post helped us out by attempting to open them on their Avid MC- no luck. The files are corrupt.

So, now the picture editor will open up the film and re-export the AAFs properly. Of course , this is what should have been done immediately but there was a huge communication lag what with the holidays and all, and the producers being in India.

Thanks everyone!
