Speeds for System Drives and Audio Drives
Hi I've got a question for you guys. I'm going to be switching to a two hard drive setup. I will be keeping my audio drive at 7200 rpm but I had an extra 10 gig 5400 rpm hard drive sitting around and was wondering if it would be ok to use that as the system drive? Is it was necessary for the system drive to be 7200 rpm? I will be more than willing to buy a new hard drive if I really should, I was just trying to save some money for some other toys. Thanks.

Re: Speeds for System Drives and Audio Drives
I ran a 60 GB 5400 RPM drive with no problems as a system drive and it even performed well in recording tests - even though I was recording directly to the C drive... but for best results, faster is almost always better, and recording to a dedicated audio drive, seperate from the system drive is always the best. But for a C / system drive, a 5400 RPM drive will probably work fine. My suggestion would be to try it... if it works for you then you're fine and you can then go buy those toys you mentioned - if it doesn't work, then you can get a different drive and save up for the "other toys". All this costs you is a little time, so test it and see if it works.

Re: Speeds for System Drives and Audio Drives
Thanks for the info and opinion Phil. I'll do that unless someone tells me otherwise before I do.

Re: Speeds for System Drives and Audio Drives
I use a 5400 rpm hard drive as a system drive and it works just fine.
It also makes a great backup for all your audio work, as one of your two places to always be backed up. Hope this helps. |
