Thunderbolt is not universal and offers little or nothing practical for audio over USB3. The high end already is Ethernet handling hundreds of channels and the low end will be USB 3.

I think Thunderbolt is a transition format.

Thunderbolt is a non starter until it is as prevalent on Windows machines as is USB for a company that services both platforms
Ethernet, again not ever Windows machine has a 1Gb NIC a lot are 100Mb NICs

I have never seen a music centric product released at NAB, any new non HD interface is primarily targeted at the music market

Musikmesse maybe, AES and Winter NAMM have been the traditional interface release shows

but hay I'm a mushroom

Thunderbolt is proprietary to Intel. High end interfaces have often been introduced at NAB or at an AES convention. They aren't typically sold by music stores.

I initially didn't agree with that statement but that seems to make sense

Thunderbolt is Apple's FW800

As far as audio interfaces are concerned....b/c I don't believe they are going anywhere for the other hardware purposes that they serve

I just put myself in the place of an audio interface manufacturer. In other words, if I were them, what would I do?

The next generation of computers and tablets are all going to be USB 3 and USB 3 has more bandwidth than FireWire 800. Thunderbolt has more bandwidth than USB3 but has cable length and connectivity issues that AES 67 Ethernet doesn't have. AES 67 compatible gear is also already in wide use in both broadcast and live sound. Making anything else would be pretty dumb.

So I made a call today to order an MBox 3 at one of the most reputable music stores here in the Washington, DC Area and when I asked if they had any in stock, he said all they had were mbox pros in stock and that Avid was discontinuing the mbox line and just focusing on the HD line. Don't know how true that is but I think that what I read earlier somewhere might be true. Maybe when it comes to anything other than HD interfaces that Avid was gonna leave that to 3 party companies to deal with.

I mean, it makes sense, to an extent. There are a lot a great interfaces on the market. Avid/Digidesign has kind of ceded the low end hardware market to their competitors.

But still, I'd take anything told to me from a music store employees with about 6 1/2 lbs of salt. My experience is that they don't know anything, and will flat out lie to you to make it appear as though they actually do know something.
