That's good that you want a mastering engineer. However, the question arises: How much can you spend? You can get it done for almost nothing to several thousand dollars.

Some people to google:

Bob Ludwig
Emily Lazar
James Cruz
Andrew Mendelson
Gavin Lurssen
Jennifer Munson

(by no means a comprehensive list, but they're some of the best)

Remember - you gets what you pays for....

I just started using a new company to me. Waltz Mastering, the owner is Tom Waltz. His rates are great and me, my studio partner and our clients that have used him are very happy with his work. www.waltzmastering.com

my rule of thumb is:

If they can't run a lathe they're just a make it loud jockey.

In my opinion you're maybe 40% right and declining simply cause that craft is fading and fading. I know a great Mastering engineer who has 3 grammys to his name and while I wont mention his name I will mention one of the albums he did which is "Oh brother where art thou" and he did not get alot of experience with a lathe so if you know who I'm talking about, you'll know he's not a "make it loud jockey".

so you asked for a mastering engineer and got some folks suggesting the absolute best in the world.............and they are expensive, and some other folks just joked it, sorry you didn't yet get much of any real world options...maybe I can help.

Check out my tunes here http://scottfranson.com/Audio.html
I mixed and mastered all of them. If you like what you hear, send me a wav file and I will give it a shot. I'll send it back mastered but clipped off at the end, if you like the sound, I'm only $30 per hour and it usually takes about an hour per song....depending on your recordings.

Do not put anything on your master strip (except a meter) and get your peak about 1dB below digital zero, then bounce your tune to a 2 track, multiple mono 24/96 file, and please use the tweak head setting when you bounce.

I have to agree with Paul on this one. While all the mastering engineers listed above are truly phenomenal, they could very well be way out of your price range, availability, or could just be far more than what you actually need given where you're at with your music. I can name at least 20 engineers off the top of my head who you've never heard of, but would do a great job with your music.

If you're interested, feel free to contact me on my site. http://kpsnyder.com
