Paying us to use their plugs !!!!

Seriously however they are saturating the market, they are taking those $29 deals and getting rich doing it. They have effectively eliminated the secondhand market- totally

Who would sell Mercury for $1500 after paying $6-8k for it?

And who would buy it for $1500 when you can get it New for $1800?

They are like TDM was a few years ago, if you go with them you need to go all in .....soundgrid everything

There's no way you could sell used for a good price. Waves charges 5% of the FULL REGULAR LIST PRICE to transfer. At least they cap it at $150. Plus you have to be current with WUP.

While you could probably be ok selling Mercury, selling Gold, Diamond, individual $29 plugins etc... is almost impossible unless you want to sell for pennies. No one wants to go through the hassle to save a few bucks.

So only buy what you want to keep. And these are good prices to buy at if you need the tools.

Waves is entrenched in the audio world since they were the first company to sell audio plugins commercially.

This.. Some of them are unique, other are pretty much the same everybody else is doing (plus undo/redo buttons) but for $26 or less.

One thing to keep in mind is that software can't be traded the same way as physical merchandise, especially after the end of the boxed software era. Copies now are simply serial numbers; any positive amount of money is a gain, especially for plugins that have paid the development costs years ago.

I think that is 100% their intention. Even flicking through my iLok account yesterday, I was surprised how many plugins state that they aren't transferrable. Developers are starting to take a page out of UAD's book I think, and want to crush the second hand & used market to funnel sales through their own stores.

It has gotten a little bit nutty. Last week the Horizon bundle was $235 through AudioDeluxe... but the license transfer fee will still be calculated on the $3999 recommended retail price. It would be less ridiculous if they just canned license transfers altogether!

I heard from a source that they lowered prices to combat software piracy. It sounds reasonable. But yes, the side-effect it impacts the second hand market.

My philosophy is not to resell plugins, perhaps give them away. But I'm a bit philanthropic that way.... plus I hate going through the hassle!!

More likely is they are simply making the best of the situation, and that it has nothing to do with piracy. The bulk of these plugins are old and in most cases there are newer and usually better alternatives. The huge, expensive bundles are still valuable to people who purchased them long ago, but they no longer represent good value to new buyers because there are so many alternatives.

Like the DAW market, the plugin market is beginning to mature. Waves appear to be entering what those in software marketing refer to as "harvest mode", where they continue to get what money they can earn from products that have been on the market a long time, and are no longer being actively developed (except the occasional bug fix or making them OS compatible). In essence, every sale of a 20-year old plugin is getting money for nothing, so of course they will lower their prices to keep sales brisk. $29 is a lot better than nothing.

That would be unwanted speculation.

I was citing an actual Waves developer.

They used to have a small number of clients back in the day, so they had to charge a premium to cover the costs. Now every man and his dog has a DAW loaded with 3rd party plugins. SO instead of selling less plugins for more money, they could now sell more plugins for less money. The maths still works out.

Given that the were losing out on sales due to piracy, because their reputation preceded them, they could now encourage pirates to pay because they were able to charge way less.

It's actually intelligent business management. That's all it is.
